Parathyroid carcinoma is a rare cause of primary hyperparathyroidism. Though the loss of the oncosuppressor HRPT2 gene product, parafibromin, has been involved in the hyperparathyroidism-jaw tumor syndrome and in a consistent set of sporadic parathyroid carcinomas, parathyroid carcinogenesis remains obscure.
